Your screen time, converted into days per year
3 hours a day is 46 days a year. 5 hours is 76. The full conversion table from daily phone use to full days per year, and why the days framing changes behaviour when hours do not.
The short version
- Multiply your daily hours by 365 and divide by 24: that is how many complete days per year you spend looking at your phone.
- 3 hours a day is 46 days a year. 5 hours is 76 days. 7 hours is 106 days — more than a quarter of your waking life.
- The days framing works because hours feel recoverable and days do not. It is the single most effective statistic for starting a screen time cut.
Hours per day are easy to shrug off. Five hours sounds like an evening. The same number expressed in days per year is harder to ignore, which is why it is the first thing Capi shows you.
The conversion table
| Per day | Days per year | Share of waking hours (16h days) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | 15 days | 6% |
| 2 hours | 30 days | 13% |
| 3 hours | 46 days | 19% |
| 4 hours | 61 days | 25% |
| 5 hours | 76 days | 31% |
| 6 hours | 91 days | 38% |
| 7 hours | 106 days | 44% |
| 8 hours | 122 days | 50% |
The formula: days per year = (hours per day × 365) ÷ 24. The third column is arguably scarier: at 5 hours a day, almost a third of the time you are awake goes to the screen.
Why this framing works
- Days feel finite. Everyone knows a year has 365 of them; giving 76 away sounds like a decision, because it is.
- It converts an abstract habit into an opportunity cost: 76 days is two and a half months, a season, a very long holiday.
- It survives comparison. '5 hours' sits comfortably next to everyone else's 5 hours; '76 days' does not sit comfortably next to anything.
